Critically reflecting what work anthropological concepts do for us, this talk presents the potential contributions of my book Comparing Conviviality: Living with Difference in Casamance and Catalonia (Palgrave, 2020) to raising awareness for diasporic knowledges of how to go about ethnic and religious diversification and concurrent power asymmetries.

Tilmann Heil will argue that the field of migration integration and living with cultural and religious difference are particularly prone to idealistic romanticisation that are tensely intertwined with scandalization, xenophobic crisis-talk, and migrant scapegoating.

svCan concepts be more realistic and thereby conducive to a better understanding of what happens on the ground? Can concepts successfully capture modes of living with insecurity and uncertainty in which cooperation and conflict coexist, and what are the risks of a disenchanted surrender that nurtures a blasé attitude towards perpetual structures of inequality and exploitation?
