Our guest this week is anthropologist Samantha Breslin! She started studying anthropology as an undergraduate student at the University of Waterloo in Canada. Her PhD examined how norms and values around gender and the meaning of expertise are constructed in an undergraduate computer science program in Singapore and what that means for the ‘making of computer scientists,’ that is, who/what students become through studying computer science. Today Samantha is working on turning her PhD thesis into articles and eventually a book. She is also teaching and supervising both in Anthropology and in the Social Data Science master’s program at the University of Copenhagen.
Samantha will speak about her research studying computer science and engineering education and will offer some reflections on experiences on doing interdisciplinary work as an anthropologist.

Diskusip is an event series for students of Anthropology that want to meet and hear the stories of anthropologists from outside the institute ‘on’ UiO. It is usually arranged multiple times each semester. A guest is invited to share something about their academic background, work place, their fieldwork and other things they want to share. In addition, the students get the opportunity to ask questions about the guests experience being an anthropologist in or outside of Norway. The events are currently held on Zoom.
SAF is the student organization in charge of planning social events for the students partaking in studies at the Institute of Social Anthropology at UiO.
